A new bike storage shelter has been installed at the Upcott Field, next to St Andrew’s Estate. Children of St. Andrew’s Primary School are now able to ride to school and have a dedicated place to store their bikes.

The shelter was officially opened last week by the town council with teachers, parents and pupils of the school in attendance.

Speaking at the opening, Mrs Leanne Arrowsmith, Head Teacher of St Andrews Primary School, said:

“Thank you from the school to the town council for listening to the needs of the school and for acting so quickly. It will allow our children to have a much more healthy lifestyle and to leave their bikes in a safe place when they come to school.

“Another big thank you to Mr. Shear who is on our PTFA and is a parent of the school who campaigned with the Council for this to happen”

The proposal to install the bike storage was put forward by local ward Councillor James Buczkowski, and unanimously supported at a meeting of the town council on 25th April 2024.

Councillor Buczkowski, said

“I am delighted to see the opening the new bike storage rack at the Upcott Field, This new facility is an important step towards encouraging our young students to adopt healthy and sustainable transportation habits from an early age.

“By providing secure and convenient bike storage, we are making it easier for students to ride their bikes to school, helping to reduce traffic congestion, and contributing to a cleaner environment. This initiative underscores our commitment to fostering a healthier, greener community for all.

“I would like to extend my gratitude to the school, PTFA and Council officers for bringing this project to fruition. Together, we are paving the way for a brighter and more sustainable future for our children and our wider community.

I look forward to further working with our partners and stakeholders over the coming months to deliver further improvements to the Upcott field”.

Councillor Tony Spring, Cullompton Town Mayor, said:

“It has been an aspiration for the council to promote sustainable travel wherever possible and to encourage more children to ride bikes to school. I’m really pleased to see this new installation and am looking forward to more projects like this for the benefit of the town.”

Further improvement projects are planned for the Upcott Field during this financial year and, as soon as these are agreed, further announcements from the Council will be made.
